BPS Seeks Pharmacists to Serve on 13 Specialty Councils with Terms Beginning in 2024
A minimum of 44 positions available, maximum of 55 positions available
Washington, D.C. – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) issues a call for applications for pharmacists to serve on 13 BPS Specialty Councils for terms beginning in 2024. Applications are due Monday, April 10, 2023 by 5:00 pm EST.
Prior to applying, pharmacists must review the responsibilities and required time commitment outlined in the Call for Applications Information Booklet and all applicable BPS policies (found on this webpage).
BPS Specialty Councils are responsible for:
- Developing standards and requirements for certification and recertification of pharmacists in the specialty area for approval by the BPS Board of Directors;
- Participating in the examination development process by reviewing and approving examination items and assembled forms of the certification examination; and
- Reviewing and approving professional development programs for the recertification of pharmacist specialists.
In mid-2022, the BPS Board of Directors and APhA Board of Trustees approved an amendment to the BPS governing documents. The amended governing documents state that specialty councils are to be comprised of at least 10 members who are board-certified in that specialty area. Each specialty council may include up to two additional members, each of whom may be either board-certified in that specialty area or a pharmacist not certified in that specialty area but with other qualifications and/or expertise pertinent to the specialty area.

BPS must receive all the following items NO LATER THAN Monday, April 10, 2023 by 5:00 pm Eastern Time.

- Completed Statement of Interest (300 words or less) responding to the prompt: “Why are you interested in serving as a member of the BPS Specialty Council?”
- Current resumé or curriculum vitae
Desired Qualifications
The individual applicant’s expertise, experience, and practice setting are considered in order to maintain balanced representation of the specialty area based on the needs of each specialty council. As such, the needs of each council are different and vary from appointment cycle to appointment cycle. Applicants with a perspective (education, training, and/or practice experience) from outside of the U.S. will be considered for all specialty councils. BPS seeks applicants with any or all the of the desired qualifications provided below.
Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialty Council (recruiting for a minimum of 3 BCACP, and up to 1 additional BCACP or non-BCACP, 3 incumbents are eligible for reappointment)
- Practice Expertise: administration/practice management, biostatistics/research methodology, genomics, infectious diseases, patient safety, psychiatry, substance use disorder
- Population Focus: geriatrics, women’s health, pediatrics
- Practice Setting: cancer center, community pharmacy, government (Armed Forces/FQHC/NIH/PHS/VA), managed care or mail order, home health care, long term care
Cardiology Pharmacy Specialty Council (recruiting for a minimum of 3 BCCP, and up to 1 additional BCCP or non-BCCP, 2 incumbents are eligible for reappointment)
- Practice Expertise: biostatistics/research methodology, genomics, patient safety
- Population Focus: public health, women’s health
- Practice Setting: acute care/critical care, community hospital, government (Armed Forces/FQHC/NIH/PHS/VA), home health care
Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy Specialty Council (recruiting for a minimum of 4 BCSCP, and up to 1 additional BCSCP or non-BCSCP, 2 incumbents are eligible for reappointment)

About the Board of Pharmacy Specialties
The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally. Board certification is a recognized credential for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels given the rigorous standards mandated by BPS board certification and recertification. BPS has currently issued more than 57,600 certifications held by pharmacists across 14 specialties.
