BPS Seeks Pharmacists to Serve on its 2022 Specialty Councils

Deadline Extended to May 10, 2021

 

Washington, DC – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) announces a deadline extension for its Call for Nominations for Specialists (Board-Certified Pharmacists) and Non-Specialist Pharmacists to serve on eight of fourteen Specialty Councils.

 

Term of Appointment

The term of appointment for BPS Specialty Council members for this call is January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024. BPS must receive nomination materials by Monday, May 10, 2021. The Council will review nominations during its summer business meeting. The BPS Board of Directors will consider recommendations for appointments. BPS anticipates the decision of new Specialty Council Members to be made before September 2021.

 

The BPS Specialty Councils are responsible for:

  • Developing standards and eligibility requirements for board certification in the specialty area for approval by the BPS Board of Directors,
  • Developing examinations and setting the passing standard for initial and continuing certification of pharmacist specialists, and
  • Reviewing and approving professional development programs for the recertification of pharmacist specialists.

 

Each Specialty Council comprises of nine members. Seven of the members of each Specialty Council are pharmacists holding BPS Board Certification in that pharmacy specialty. Two members of each Specialty Council are pharmacists who do not hold board certification in the specialty area that the Council is responsible.

 

Nomination Deadline and Details

BPS must receive all the following items NO LATER THAN Monday, May 10, 2021.

  1. Completed and signed Nomination Form:
  1. Completed Statement of Interest (300 words or less) — Response to the question: “Why are you interested in serving as a member of the BPS Specialty Council?”
  2. Current resumé or curriculum vitae
  3. Completed and signed Conflict of Interest, Disclosure, Antitrust Statement Documents
  4. Up to two letters of recommendation (optional)

 

Desired Qualifications

BPS carefully considers individual nominee’s expertise, experience, and setting to maintain an appropriate representation for the specialty area when making appointments based on the needs of the Specialty Council. As such, the needs of each Specialty Council are different and will vary from appointment cycle to appointment cycle.

 

Prior to submitting a nomination, pharmacists should carefully review and consider the qualifications, position duties, responsibilities, and required time commitments outlined in the Call for Nominations Information Booklets for Specialist Member or Non-Specialist Member, the BPS Conflict of Interest policy, and the Commitment to Serve. BPS seeks nominees with any or all the of the following desired qualifications provided below.

 

Cardiology Pharmacy Specialist Member (a total of three BCCP positions open, two incumbents are eligible for reappointment)

  • Practice Expertise: Acute Care Cardiology, Ambulatory Cardiac Risk Reduction, Ambulatory Care, Cardiac Critical Care, Public Health, Residency Program Director
  • Population Focus: Anticoagulation, Heart Failure, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia
  • Practice Setting: Academia-affiliated, Ambulatory Care Clinic, Federally qualified health center, Managed Care, Hospital- Community, University, VA
  • International perspective for consideration: Education, training, and practice outside of the U.S. will be considered.

 

Cardiology Pharmacy Non-Specialist Member (a total of one non-BCCP position open, no incumbent is eligibile for reappointment)

  • Practice Expertise: Academia, Biostatics / Research Methodology, Patient Safety, Public Health
  • Practice Setting: Government (Armed Services / FQHC / NIH / Public Health Service / VA), Home Health Care, Managed Care / Mail Order
  • International perspective for consideration: Education, training, and practice outside of the U.S. will be considered.

 

Critical Care Pharmacy Specialist Member (a total of two BCCCP positions open, one incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

  • Practice Focus: Administration/Management, Biostatistics and Research Methodology, Hematology/Oncology Supportive Care, Medication Safety/Quality Assurance, Nutrition Support, Practice Accreditation Systems
  • Population Focus: Pediatrics
  • Practice Setting: Hospital / Health-system based Setting

 

Geriatric Pharmacy Specialist Member (a total of two BCGP positions open, one incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

  • Practice Expertise: Biostatistics and research methodology, Complementary medicine, Dermatologic, Genomics, Hematologic, Palliative Care, Infectious Diseases, Transitions of Care, Ophthalmology, Public Health, Nutrition/hydration
  • Practice Setting: Community/Chain Pharmacy, Hospice, Community/University Hospital, Home Health/Infusion, Independent Consultant/Clinical Pharmacist, Long-Term Care Pharmacy/LTC facility, Managed Care/Mail Service, Acute Care
  • International perspective for consideration: Education, training, and practice outside of the U.S. will be considered.

 

Geriatric Pharmacy Non-Specialist Member (a total of one non-BCGP position open, no incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

Nuclear Pharmacy Specialist Member (a total of two BCNP positions open, one incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

  • Practice Expertise: Academia, Pharmaceutical Company/ Contract Research Organization, Centralized Nuclear Pharmacy, Health System and/or Institutional Practice, Legal and Quality, Pharmaceutical Company/ Contract Research Organization
  • Practice Setting: Consulting Company, Contract Research Organization, Pharmaceutical Company, Commercial Chain Nuclear Pharmacy, Commercial Independent Nuclear Pharmacy, Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturer

Nuclear Pharmacy Non-Specialist Member (a total of one non-BCNP position open, one incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

Nutrition Support Pharmacy Specialist Member (a total of two BCNSP positions open, one incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

  • Practice Setting: Government: NIH/Public Health Service, Hospital / Health-system based Setting – Pediatric, Home Health Care, Nutrition Support Clinic

Nutrition Support Pharmacy Non-Specialist Member (a total of one non-BCNSP position open, no incumbent is eligible for reappointment)

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) was established in 1976 as an autonomous division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The mission of BPS is to improve patient care by positioning BPS Board-Certified Pharmacist Specialists as integral members of interprofessional healthcare teams, through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge, and skills for pharmacists in the United States and internationally.
