Board of Pharmacy Specialties Seeks Pharmacists
to Serve on its Cardiology, Geriatric, and Infectious Diseases Specialty Councils

Washington, DC – The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) today issues a Call for Nominations for cardiology pharmacists and infectious diseases pharmacists to serve on its Cardiology Pharmacy and Infectious Diseases Specialty Councils, respectively. BPS also issues a Call for Nominations for Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists (BCGP) and Non-Specialist Pharmacists to serve on the Geriatric Pharmacy Specialty Council. 

Cardiology Pharmacy Term and Eligibility – Nine Positions Open

The term of appointment for BPS Cardiology Pharmacy Specialty Council members are usually based on the calendar year. The specific term for this call is June 2, 2017 to December 31, 2020. There are nine (9) positions open. *However, two (2) members from each Specialty Council will serve terms that end December 31, 2018 to allow for the appointment of two (2) Board Certified Pharmacists in 2019. Nominees for the BPS Cardiology Pharmacy Specialty Council must be active, licensed pharmacists, and have an active cardiology pharmacy practice. BPS board certification in another specialty area is preferred, but not required. Individuals who hold Added Qualifications in Cardiology are encouraged to apply.

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Term and Eligibility – Nine Positions Open

The term of appointment for BPS Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council members are usually based on the calendar year. The specific term for this call is June 2, 2017 to December 31, 2020. There are nine (9) positions open. *However, two (2) members from each Specialty Council will serve terms that end December 31, 2018 to allow for the appointment of two (2) Board Certified Pharmacists in 2019. Nominees for a BPS Specialty Council must be active, licensed pharmacists, and have an active infectious diseases pharmacy practice. BPS board certification in another specialty area is preferred, but not required. Individuals who hold Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases are encouraged to apply.

Geriatric Pharmacy Term and Eligibility – Nine Positions Open

The term of appointment for BPS Geriatric Pharmacy Specialty Council members for this call is January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020.

Specialist Position (7 BCGP positions open): Pharmacists who currently hold the BPS Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) credential are eligible to apply.

Non-Specialist Position (2 non-BCGP positions open): Pharmacists who do not hold the BCGP credential are eligible to apply. Non-specialists should have practice expertise that is complementary to but distinct from the specialty area. A Non-specialist member may hold board certification in other specialty areas.

 

Experience and Expertise
Prospective specialty council members must have at least five (5) years of dedicated experience in the specialty practice area. Specialty councils should be comprised of pharmacists with extensive practice expertise from a variety of practice settings. Participation on other licensure or certification boards, and experience with certification activities (e.g. as an item writer, role delineation study/job task analysis participant) are preferred, but not required.

BPS must receive nomination materials by Monday, May 1, 2017. The BPS Board of Directors will consider recommendations for appointments. BPS anticipates the decision of new Specialty Council Members to be made by Friday, June 2, 2017.

**New Member Orientation**

Appointed Specialty Council Members MUST participate in the New Member Orientation scheduled for July 29 – 30, 2017 in the Washington, DC metro area.

Purpose

Specialty Councils serve the following purposes:

  • To recommend to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties standards and other requirements for certification and recertification of pharmacists in the specialty.
  • To develop and administer examinations as required for certification and recertification of pharmacists in the specialty.
  • To evaluate the qualifications of individual pharmacists and to submit to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties the names of those pharmacists recommended for certification or recertification in the specialty.Please note that the BPS Board strives to establish a mix of practice expertise and practice setting diversity for each Specialty Council. Interested candidates should carefully review and consider the qualifications, position duties, responsibilities, and time commitment to serve as a member of the Specialty Council (see Position Duties below)
