New Added Qualifications Recognition

Establishing a new Added Qualification is a multi-step process that begins with the submission of a petition on behalf of at least 25 pharmacists. These pharmacists are currently certified in the same BPS-recognized specialty.

NOTE: WHILE THERE IS NO CHARGE TO PETITION FOR RECOGNITION OF ADDED QUALIFICATIONS, ALL SUBMISSION COSTS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PETITIONER(S).

Petitions for a new Added Qualification are submitted to and reviewed by an ad hoc Petition Review Committee, consisting of relevant Specialty Council members. Specific Criteria must be addressed in each petition.

The full Specialty Council then works with the Petition Review Committee and representatives of the petitioning group to approve a portfolio review process. Final approval for both the new Added Qualification and its portfolio review process falls to BPS. Once accomplished, the Specialty Council implements the review process.

Denial of Petitions

If a Specialty Council does not approve a petition for recognition of Added Qualifications, it must outline specific weaknesses for the petitioner. Unless a revised petition is submitted within one year, it is considered abandoned. The petitioner may appeal a negative decision of the Specialty Council to the Board within 60 days of notification.

If the Board does not approve the petition and the portfolio review process as recommended by the Specialty Council, it will advise the petitioner and the Specialty Council of the reasons for the denial. Petition proposals may be resubmitted, once the areas of concern noted by BPS have been addressed. The petitioner may also appeal a negative decision by the Board within 60 days.
