Board of Pharmacy Specialties Confers Added Qualifications to 36 Pharmacists

Washington, DC - The Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS), an agency whose purpose is to recognize pharmacy specialties and certify pharmacists' knowledge and skills at the advanced practice level, today announced the conferral of Added Qualifications to 36 Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists.

With the growing complexity in pharmacologic information, there is an increased need for focused areas within established pharmacy specialties. The term, "Added Qualification," is used to denote an enhanced level of training and experience within one segment of a BPS-recognized specialty that targets specific diseases or patient populations. Cardiology and Infectious Diseases, both within the Pharmacotherapy specialty, have been approved to date.

Added Qualifications in Cardiology were awarded to: Kristen Bova Campbell, Terri S. Cook, Tyler C. Dodson, Christopher Ensor, James M. Hollands, Kathryn Mathews, Howard Mun, Carrie Wentz Nemerovski, Carrie S. Oliphant, Leslie K. Ruppe, Marintha R. Short, and Andrew J. Smith.

David Michael DiPersio, Julie A. Johnson, and James S. Kalus had their Added Qualifications in Cardiology renewed.

Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases were awarded to Scott J. Bergman, Maggie J. Brownell, Erica L. Dobson, Elizabeth Dodds Ashley, Rania El-Lababidi, Heather Cox Hall, Theresa C. Jaso, Alicia M. Jenh, William L. Musick, Michael D. Nailor, Ursula C. Patel, Gregory K. Perry, Radhika S. Polisetty, David W. Smith, Christine B. Teng, Thomas L. Wilson, and Liew Yixin.

James W. Johnson, Robert E. Nelson, Michael Postelnick, and G. Christopher Wood had their Added Qualifications in Infectious Diseases renewed.

Conferees each submitted a detailed portfolio describing their training and experience. A Portfolio Review Committee of the Specialty Council on Pharmacotherapy evaluated and recommended successful candidates to BPS for recognition of Added Qualifications. These credentials are effective through December 31, 2017. There are now 195 pharmacists with Added Qualifications with 81 in Cardiology and 114 in Infectious Diseases. The current requirements for portfolio content and the review and scoring process used by the Specialty Council are available on the BPS web site.
